We must be mindful that our clients either  have the skills to continue safe driving or make informed decisions regarding the appropriate time to relinquish driving privileges.

In many cases people are able to return to driving post stroke, amputation and other medical events. If your patient wants to return to driving we will assess, advise, guide through vehicle purchase, modification and equipment for vehicle controls, and training to use alternate controls safely.

How do you establish whether your elderly patients are safe to continue driving?

Try SIMARD MD - Screen for the Identification of Cognitively Impaired Medically At-Risk Drivers, A Modification of the DemTect.

SIMARD MD is a valid and reliable screening tool, it takes only five minutes to administer, is free and downloadable.

The SIMARD MD will identify drivers with a high probability of failing a driver evaluation, those with a high probability of passing and those who need referral for a driving assessment to determine competence.

Visit www.mard.ualberta.ca/Home/SIMARD/index.cfm for information about this tool, to register your interest in using SIMARD MD and for training videos.

Use the on-line referral form to request an assessment of clients with cognitive and/or physical concerns that affect their ability to drive or use transport.
